9th Friedrich World Championship, 2014

The Final

A: The players take their seats

Peter Hannappel, undefeated in the qualification round, chooses the role of "Maria Theresa".
Will he be the first one to win a final with that role?

Bjorn Apelqvist, undefeated as well, opts for Prussia. No player plays the Prussian faster than he.

Alex Calderón takes "Elisabeth" and Alberto Romero "Pompadour".

And the final has started. Sweden is attacked by Hanover (one of Bjorn's favourite strategies).
B: Course of the game

Bjorn quickly concentrates 3 generals in Saxony for 23 troops stack (which allows him an automatic −1 retreat against the expected 24 troops stack of Austria). Ferdinand makes pressure against Sweden, while Seydlitz awaits the French at the hearts-spades sector border just before Magdeburg.

Due to the weak defense in Hanover, Alberto rapidly conquers objectives, while Austria ignores Silesia for the mmoment, gathering his troops for a big offensive in Saxony. Alex manages to annihilate Lehwaldt very fast, and bypasses the defender of Kammin. Instead Saltikow and Fermor advance towards Berlin.

In turn 6, Bjorn offers an encirclement in Saxony. Peter dares the attack, and a furious diamonds battle is fought. Austria loses that battle narrowly by −3. In the meantime, the Russians eliminate a Prussian supply train south of Berlin and move nortwards to Stettin thereafter, and France has taken all objectives except Magdeburg and Halberstadt.

In turn 7, Alberto attacks with all 3 generals stacked the sole guard of Magdeburg. French spades vs Prussian hearts. Bjorn manages to empty the French spades hand completely.

Directly thereafter, Sweden makes peace. This sets Ferdinand free, and he moves back to Hanover.

Peter realizes that France is in trouble (due to the lack of spades). He fears that Prussia needs no general against France (since Hanover has spades, while France has not), and so he eliminates Cumberland near Haldensleben.

In turn 9, Bjorn decides to attack the French triple stack again. This time it is spades vs spades. However, it is not the expected blow out, since Alberto has a reserve and manages a cheap retreat. The Prussian general (Seydlitz) is oos and flipped. Alberto makes best use of that by blocking all paths back to Prussia, and so Seydlitz starves in turn 10.

Just before his starvation, the Tsarina died, and Alex took over the Imperial army.

Now, the defense of Magdeburg and Halberstadt is solely the task of Schwerin. Alex, the new imperial commander, does not realize that. He attacks Schwerin, eliminating him. And so it is easy for Alberto to conquer his last objectives. He wins after 10 turns and becomes the 2014 Friedrich World Champion!

C: Pictures

Due to technical problems there are only few pictures this year.

The allied turn. How to crack Bjorns defense?

Alex has taken over the Imperial army.

After turn 10, the game is over. The players discuss their moves.

In the qualification round, Bjorns strategy worked wonderful. But it failed in the final!

But he is happy about his Grandmaster trophy as well.

Peter Hannappel is promoted to 2014 Grandmaster, too. (As to be seen, he lost focus in which camera to look ;-) )

Alex Calderón, the third 2014 Grandmaster.

And now, Alberto Romero receives his Friedrich World Champion trophy!

The happy Champion in the wonderful castle Friedrichsfelde.
