9th Friedrich World Championship

The Participants

Saturday morning, the second game of the qualification round. The player make their opening moves.

Altogether 34 player participated in the 9th Friedrich World Championship. For 6 players it was their first participation.

The players came from the following countries: Germany (22), Sweden (3), United Kingdom (2), Spain (4), Netherlands (2), USA (1).

Unfortunately, a 35th participant had to be disqualified, since he did not show up on Saturday morning (and not thereafter).

Due to the format, the number of participants has to be a multiple of 4. Therefore, the Friedrich designer Richard Sivél, Richard Shako and Rodrigo Witzel filled the gaps as spontaneous helpers. They played out of competition.

Who was playing against whom was decided by drawing lots. Like in the previous years, every player could meet each player only once in the tournament. Furthermore, the lots were pre-sorted into pots in such a way that players coming from the same city could not meet each other.

Game 14: Guy Atkinson is thinking about his defense of Saxony. He will win with Prussia after 22 turns.

Game 27: Jürgen Winter dares an Offensive Option. Note that an Austrian 3 generals stack is encircled. Some moments later this stack will be annihilated. Jürgen could have won his OO in ca. turn 10, if he had not forgotten to protect one already conquered objective. — Due to this mistake, Jürgen had to switch over to defensive mode. Nevertheless his Prussians were victorious after 21 turns.
